Veladero mine is located in San Juan Province, Argentina, immediately to the south of the
Pascua-Lama Property, approximately 320 kilometers northwest of the city of San Juan in the
highly prospective Frontera District. The property is located at elevations of between 4,000
and 4,850 meters above sea level.
In 2006, its first full year of production, Veladero produced 511,000 ounces of gold. Proven and probable mineral
reserves estimated at 11.4 million ounces of gold.
Veladero is a conventional open-pit operation. Recovered gold is smelted on-site and shipped to
an outside refinery for processing into bullion. Power is provided by a generator with a capacity
of 13 megawatts.
The Veladero orebody is an oxide, gold-silver deposit, hosted by a Miocene diatreme-dome complex.
Mineralization occurs in silicified volcanic breccias at the core of the high sulphidation
alteration and is controlled by stratigraphy, structural trends and elevation. The mineralization
in the deposit forms a broad, disseminated, 3-kilometer-long blanket along a N15°W-striking
structural trend.
Drilling around the Veladero mine focused on adding resources and looking for extensions
of mineralization. Early stage exploration continued in the Frontera district and
outlined new gold and copper-gold targets for future testing.
